Why perform an Educational & Neuro-developmental assessment?

There are different reasons for doing an Educational & Neuro-developmental assessment. The main reasons are to:

1 Establish a baseline
2 Find out which therapy to start with
3 Find out which programme to start with
4 Find out which parts of the brain are not being accessed
5 Measure progress

When seeing a child for the first time, I often do a variety of age-appropriate tests to assess their neuro-developmental and educational level. This will show at what age level they are currently operating compared to their chronological age. It will also provide a baseline for future assessments to determine how much progress has been made.

Which Tests Do I Use and What Do They Assess?

1. Primitive Reflexes Testing

Testing the Primitive reflexes to determine whether they are fully extinguished or not. This is useful for young children who cannot draw or write yet.

2. Tansley Test

To check for the level of integration of Primitive reflexes.

3. Bender-Gestalt Test

To check for the level of integration of Primitive reflexes.

4. Writing Test

This comprehensive assessment evaluates whether the child:

  • Knows how to write all the letters both upper and lower case
  • Knows how to write the numbers 1-20
  • Writes any reversals (e.g., "b" for "d", "was" for "saw", "on" for "no")
  • Uses the correct pen grip
  • Can write on and between the lines
  • Can write a story
  • Uses upper- and lower-case letters appropriately in a story
  • Spells appropriately
5. Neale Analysis Test (Revised Edition)

A comprehensive reading assessment that evaluates:

  • Identifying names and sounds of the letters of the alphabet in lower case and upper case
  • Identification of the initial letter of a word
  • Auditory discrimination of initial, middle and final sounds
  • Reading test to assess: Accuracy, Comprehension and Rate
  • Graded spelling test
6. Lindamood Auditory Conceptualisation (LAC) Test

Assessing critical auditory processing skills:

  • Auditory discrimination
  • Auditory conceptualisation
7. Woodcock Reading Mastery Test (Revised Edition)

Comprehensive reading skills evaluation:

  • Visual-Auditory Learning
  • Letter Identification
  • Word Identification
  • Word Attack
  • Word Comprehension: Antonyms, Synonyms, Analogies
  • Passage Comprehension: Cloze test
8. KeyMaths Test (Revised Edition)

This test assesses 14 areas of Mathematics, making it easy to identify areas of relative weakness.

My data have shown that many children who say they can't do Mathematics actually do well in many areas of this test, and both children and adults generally enjoy doing it.

However, when assessing addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and word problems—which are prerequisite skills for algebra and calculus—they often do poorly because it involves Mental Maths skills.
