Functional Pathology Testing

We Are Living in an Increasingly Toxic World

Over the last 50 years there has been a dramatic increase in the use of food additives, antibiotics, vaccinations, building materials, mould toxins, heavy metals such as Aluminium, Mercury, Lead, Cadmium and Arsenic, Glyphosate (roundup) and other herbicides, pesticides and many man-made chemicals (toxicants) in the air, soil and our waterways.

Brain inflammation

During this period, the incidence of Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders, as well as other childhood disorders and neuro-developmental delay, has also risen dramatically. To a certain extent everyone is now exposed to some or many of these toxicants. However, unborn fetuses, babies and young children are not just small versions of adults, their detoxification systems are still immature.

Therefore, they can, at best, only detoxify a small amount of toxicants, which means the rest will be stored somewhere in their body. If the toxicants are fat-soluble, they are often stored in the brain's fatty tissue, where they cause an inflammatory response by the brain's immune system. The extent of the neuro-inflammation is often determined by the nature and the size of the total toxic load of the brain tissue.

This begs the following question: "Why does one child regress into Autism and another one does not?" The answer lies both in the child's genetic susceptibility and the total toxic load (exposome), so we need to investigate both. You can find out about your child's genetic susceptibility on the DNA testing page.

Why Does a Child Regress into Autism?

Stressors vs Resilience

Environmental toxins, testosterone, poor diet, trauma, poor genetic make-up, antibiotics, poor gut flora, mould toxins, heavy metals, Glyphosate (roundup) and other herbicides and pesticides are all stressors that can contribute towards regression into Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). A stressor is defined as anything that causes stress to a person.

Whether you move in the direction of health or disease, depends on the net result of two opposing forces:

  • The sum-total effect of the stressors on your body (exposome)
  • Your body's ability to deal with these stressors (resilience)
When the number of stressors outweigh the body's capacity to deal with them, the bouncy castle will collapse and at that point your child may regress into Autism.

Therefore, if we want to reverse the regression, we need to find out what caused it. This means we need to find the answer to the following questions:

  • Which stressor(s) had the biggest impact on your child's regression into autism?
  • Why was your child's resilience not high enough to deal with these stressors?

Fortunately, Functional Pathology testing can help us with the identification of many of the toxicants and stressors, so that we can create a picture of the possible root cause(s) and determine what to do about them.

What Functional Pathology Tests Are Available?

There is a large variety of Functional Pathology tests available. They can give you an insight into the nature and level of: toxicants, heavy metals environmental toxins, pesticides, herbicides, especially Glyphosate (Round-up) and mould toxins (myco-toxins), as well as markers of intestinal overgrowth produced by your child's gut flora such as yeast, fungal and bacterial toxins.

You can also find out how well your child's body is functioning by a DIY urine test that shows the levels of vitamins and neuro-transmitters that your child's body has produced (OATs test) and you can investigate the status of your child's gut health, identify any allergies and food intolerances.

Together with DNA testing, these tests can help identify possible root cause(s) for your child's regression into autism.

The Following Functional Pathology Tests Are Available:

1. Urine Tests

Urine testing

The quickest, cheapest and easiest urine test is a Reagent Urinalysis Test. Dependent on the test strip, it can show up to 10 indicators in the urine, such as the PH (acid, neutral or alkaline), hydration status, protein, glucose as well as leukocytes, which are related to an infection.

You will receive a free urinalysis test during your consultation with me.

For a more in-depth urinary analysis, the Organic Acid Test (OAT) is one of the best known and most versatile Functional Pathology urine tests. It looks at 70 products that your body excretes in the urine and will give you a good insight in your child's energy production, Neuro-transmitter production, the presence of yeast, fungi and pathogenic bacteria in your child's gut and lots more.

Glyphosate Testing

Glyphosate exposure

Glyphosate, the active ingredient of Round-up, is used by many people, councils and farmers as a weed killer. Glyphosate acts like an antibiotic and can therefore have a devastating effect on your child's beneficial gut flora. It can also have a negative effect on his/her brain by interfering with brain function, neuro-development and the production of one of the brain's main antioxidants, i.e. Glutathione. A decreased amount of Glutathione will also result in an increased amount of neuro-inflammation.

The glyphosate test can be done as an add-on to the OAT test at a reduced price. Click here for more information: Comprehensive Glyphosate Test | MosaicDX

TOXDetect: Environmental Chemicals Test
Many environmental chemicals can also be detected in the urine. The kind and amount of toxins and toxicants that are present in your child's body can be measured through a TOXDetect test. This test can also be done as an add-on to the OAT test at a reduced price.

Mould Toxin Testing

Mould exposure

If you suspect that your child may have been exposed to mould, the MycoTOX Profile test would be the most suitable test to investigate this further, as it will test for a variety of mycotoxins, i.e. toxins produced by mould.

You can find more information about this test on: Comprehensive MycoTOX Profile | MosaicDX

2. Stool Testing

Gut flora testing

The GI360 test is a comprehensive test that is designed to assess your child's gut flora.

You can click on the link to find out more: GI360 Test | RNLabs

3. Hair Testing

Hair analysis testing

There is a certain group of toxins that can best be measured through the hair, because they are excreted into the hair. These are the heavy metals, such as lead, aluminum, cadmium, mercury as well as arsenic.

These metals can interfere with brain communication, development, learning & function.

The presence and level of these metals can be assessed through a Hair Toxic Elements Exposure Analysis test from Doctors Data. You can read more on their website: Hair Toxic Elements Test | Doctors Data

4. Blood Spot: Precision Allergy 88 Test

The Precision Allergy 88 test measures the immune response to 88 foods. The test assesses these 88 foods for an allergic, sensitivity and inflammatory response. Foods that cause an allergic or inflammatory response, need to be removed from the diet to prevent further inflammation and possibly further neuro-degeneration.

You can read more on this test by clicking on the following link: Precision Allergy 88 Test

How Can I Order a Functional Pathology Test?

There are 2 ways of ordering Functional Pathology tests from the Research Nutrition (RNLabs) website:

  • During a face-to-face consultation, where we can discuss which tests are most suitable for your child. I then authorise you for these tests and you can either collect the test kit(s) from me or, after payment has been received, the lab will send them to your home address. All of these tests are DIY tests that can be done at home or if you prefer, some can be done during your consultation with me.
  • Contact me for a free half hour introductory phone/online consultation and I can authorise the tests for you. You can then order them online and after payment has been received, RNlabs will send the test kit(s) directly to you.

Your Test Results

The lab will send a pdf with your test results to me and I will let you know asap when they have arrived. You can then make an appointment to discuss your test results with me and to design a treatment protocol.
