Autism & Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Autism & Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Autism & Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are chronic neuro-developmental conditions that are often diagnosed by a set of symptoms that can be present to a lesser or greater extent, often corresponding with the severity of the Autism.

These conditions are often caused by poor gut health, an overload of toxins and an inability to deal with these toxins.

Why is this? Our genes haven't changed that much during these 50 years, so what has?

What Causes Autism & ASD?

Toxic spraying pesticides

The environment has changed dramatically. Over the last 50 years there has been an enormous increase in the amount of toxicants (man-made toxins) in our environment and in our food.

This is due to an increased use of pesticides and herbicides particularly Glyphosate (Round-up), industrial toxicants, artificial food additives, artificial air fresheners, plastics, cosmetics, detergents, hand sanitisers, disinfectants, insecticides and antibiotics. These toxicants affect the soil, the air, our water ways and thus the food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink.

Mother and child

Most children are not born Autistic. Many parents have told me they can pinpoint the exact moment their child became autistic and they knew the trigger that caused it. This is called regressive autism. It is possible that this can also happen in the womb through the umbilical cord.

Regardless of when or where it happened, we need to find out why it happened. The trigger may or may not have been the only cause. Often there are many contributing factors that set up the conditions for regression and the trigger is merely the straw that breaks the camel's proverbial back.

Stressors vs Resilience diagram

There is no single toxicant, gene or nutrient deficiency that is known to cause Autism or ASD. However, regression is often due to a combination of many factors, usually referred to as Stressors or Exposome (sum-total of the genetic and environmental influences accumulated over a person's lifetime, i.e. starting at conception in the womb).

When the sum-total of the Stressors is more than the body's Resilience can handle, a child may regress into Autism (see picture), often because of a trigger.

Common Symptoms

Each child on the Autism spectrum has a different set of symptoms. Some have more gut symptoms, whereas others have more neurological symptoms. However, most children on the Autism spectrum have one or more of the following to a greater or lesser extent:

  • Neuro-developmental delay
  • Behavioural problems
  • Learning difficulties
  • Communication problems
  • Repetitive behaviour
  • Stimming movements
  • Obsessive tendencies
  • Picky eater, usually with a preference for a limited choice of high carbohydrates, low fibre foods such as white bread with peanut butter
  • Sore tummy
  • Smelly stools
  • Diarrhoea and/or constipation

The Gut-Brain-Immune Connection

Gut-brain-immune axis

These symptoms can be caused by a variety of underlying biochemical problems, which are different for each child. However, research has shown that there is a connection between the gut, the brain and the immune system, which is often referred to as the gut-brain-immune axis.

What affects one, affects the others. When the gut wall is "leaky" or permeable, the Brain Blood Barrier becomes "leaky" as well and toxins and toxicants can leak into the brain. These toxins activate the immune system in the brain, resulting in brain inflammation.

Common Characteristics in Children on the Autism Spectrum

Child with autism characteristics

Even though each child has a different set of symptoms, most children on the autism spectrum have some or all of the following characteristics:

  • An overload of toxins
  • A poor ability to clear these toxins from their system, which often has a strong genetic component
  • Limited diversity and poor gut flora, i.e. too many "bad" bugs, not enough "good" bugs
  • Increased gut permeability, i.e. "leaky gut"
  • Increased gut inflammation
  • Poor digestion leading to poor absorption, which in turn leads to poor nutrient status
  • Increased permeability of the brain-blood-barrier
  • Increased brain inflammation
  • Presence of gut derived toxins in the brain such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS)
  • High testosterone levels, which is related to a decreased protection from heavy metals in the brain. This explains why boys outnumber girls 4:1

Each and all of the above can result in interference with neuro-development and neuro-function. This is fundamentally a biochemical (often referred to as a biomedical) problem and therefore needs to be addressed as such.

What Does the Science Say?

Brain inflammation

An Australian research study from 2022 has shown that children on the Autism Spectrum have more cytokines (chemicals related to an inflammatory state) compared to neurotypical children.

Reference: Autism CRC Research Report 2022

The brains of Autistic children are on fire
An inflamed brain causes damage to the neurons, as well as to the connections between them, which can ultimately lead to regression.

Furthermore, an inflamed brain cannot develop, learn or perform optimally, if at all.

The key questions that need to be asked are:

  • Why is their brain inflamed?
  • What can we do about it?

A therapy that aims to find the answer to these questions and aims to identify and address the root cause(s), must therefore be the priority treatment for children on the autism spectrum. Until this has been achieved, doing behavioural therapies is like putting the cart before the horse and their effect will be minimal at best and thus a great waste of parents' time, energy and financial resources.

Scientific Evidence for Targeted Biomedical Treatment

A scientific study published in 2019 investigated the "Targeted Biomedical Treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorders". The authors concluded:

"The assessment and identification of relevant physiological alterations and targeted intervention are more likely to produce positive treatment outcomes. As such, current evidence indicates the utility of an approach based on personalized and evidence-based medicine, rather than treatment targeted to all that may not always be beneficial (primum non nocere)."

Reference: PubMed 2019 Study

In other words:

  • Performing the tests required to identify the problem(s), followed by an individual targeted approach to resolve the problem(s) is likely to produce the best treatment outcomes
  • A one-shoe-fits-all approach, using therapies that produce minimal, or no results is not a smart use of resources

Fire causes damage, so time is of the essence.

The longer the fire is allowed to rage on, the more neurological damage will be done and the more difficult it will be to reverse the condition. Early intervention for autism therefore needs to focus on putting out the fire asap.

The nutritional supplements that are required to put out the fire, remove the toxins and rebuild the cells, are the therapeutic support for children on the autism spectrum and they are as essential for a child on the Autism Spectrum as a wheelchair for a child with quadriplegia. Without these nutrients, the fire will continue to rage and cause more ongoing neuronal damage, from which it is harder to recover.

Can You Recover from (Regressive) Autism & ASD?

Recovered child

Fortunately, the answer is yes. Many children have already recovered from (regressive) Autism, so how is that achieved? The answer lies in identifying the root cause(s) of the neuro-inflammation.

Whether these root cause(s) are genetic, environmental, related to nutrient deficiencies, poor gut health or all of the above, once you know what the root cause(s) are, you can address them appropriately, thereby reducing gut, immune and neuro-inflammation.

Therefore, the key to a successful recovery from (regressive) Autism, is a therapy that works from the inside-out and is started as early as possible.
