When seeing a child for the first time, I often do a variety of age-appropriate tests to assess their neuro-developmental and educational level. This will show at what age level they are currently operating compared to their chronological age. It will also provide a baseline for future assessments to determine how much progress has been made.

My data have shown that many children who say they can't do Mathematics actually do well in many areas of this test, and both children and adults generally enjoy doing it.
However, when assessing addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and word problems—which are prerequisite skills for algebra and calculus—they often do poorly because it involves Mental Maths skills.
